| This unusually large painting depicting
ten generations of male descendants is one of a pair--the other featuring the men's wives.
Derived from traditions of ancestral portraiture, the painting may be read as a
geneological chart, with each of the men's names written on the lapel of their robes. (The
women are not named.). Beneath the portraits, five further generations of men are recorded
in name only. As the painting covers a rather broad expanse of time, the fashions of the
descendants change according to the dynasty under which they lived. Here, the first eight
generations of men are dressed in the costume of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), while the
last two are in Qing dynasty (1644-1911) apparel. |
