Considered one of the world's leading martial artists, Fumio Demura studied kendo and judo during his youth before going on to practice karate. After becoming an All-Japan Freefighting champion, Demura sensei concentrated his martial arts practice on karate and the art of Okinawan kobudo. Now a foremost authority in kobudo, Demura sensei is a member of the prestigious Black Belt Hall of Fame (1969, Instructor of the year; 1975, Man of the Year) and travels the world to teach these arts.
The kama is a sickle that Okinawan farmers used to harvest their rice crops. As a tiny island nation, Okinawans were prey to attackers; consequently, they adapted the kama as one of the several work implements which could be used as a formidable weapon of self-defense. Unlike other tools such as the bo and sai-which are normally made of wood or bamboo-the kama has a sharp cutting edge. Today, many martial artists specialize in the kama, applying impressive and dazzling techniques to their kata in tournaments. Before using this weapon in competitions, however, kama practitioners must know the rudiments of the kama kata forms, including the proper implementation of the weapon as it was used in combat centuries ago.
In this DVD, Demura sensei teaches the fundamentals of proper kama use, including proper grips, strikes, stances, counters and defenses. A beginner's basic kata is also covered in this volume. |
